Development and history

Dark Tower was programmed by John Hall during the original Vectrex era but did not receive a standard commercial release before the system was discontinued. The VGDB classifies it as a prototype with a surviving binary and later modern release.

This later Fred Taft hack modifies John Hall’s preserved Dark Tower prototype. The page keeps both credits visible so the original-era code and the community alteration are not conflated.

This page uses one stable canonical URL for the title and loads its embedded ROM directly into the emulator after the Vectrex BIOS is ready.

Gameplay and background

The surviving program can be played as an action-oriented prototype, but balance, polish, and completion should be understood in that context. Vectrexia runs the preserved ROM while retaining the prototype label. This edition changes the experience through its fred taft community hack behavior.

How to play in Vectrexia

  • Move with the Arrow keys or WASD. Compatible controllers can use the left analog stick or D-pad.
  • Vectrex buttons 1–4 map to Z, X, C, and V, and to the standard face buttons on most gamepads.
  • Press a controller button after connecting it so the browser can expose the gamepad to the page.

Audio may begin after the first click, key press, or controller input because browsers can restrict autoplay.
