Development and history
Scramble originated as Konami’s 1981 arcade shooter and helped establish the side-scrolling shooting format. The Vectrex version was coded by Paul Newell and released in 1982.
Vectrex developer history places Newell within a small reverse-engineering effort intended to explore arcade conversions. Scramble became the released result, translating terrain, fuel depots, rockets, bombs, and a multi-stage run into a vector display.
This page uses one stable canonical URL for the title and loads its embedded ROM directly into the emulator after the Vectrex BIOS is ready.
Gameplay and background
Control altitude and speed while firing forward and dropping bombs. Destroy fuel tanks to replenish the constantly falling fuel gauge, pass through increasingly constrained terrain, and survive all six sections to attack the final base.
How to play in Vectrexia
- Move with the Arrow keys or WASD. Compatible controllers can use the left analog stick or D-pad.
- Vectrex buttons 1–4 map to Z, X, C, and V, and to the standard face buttons on most gamepads.
- Press a controller button after connecting it so the browser can expose the gamepad to the page.
Audio may begin after the first click, key press, or controller input because browsers can restrict autoplay.
