Development and history
Verzerk was created by Alex Herbert in 2002 as a substantial hack of the Vectrex Berzerk program. Sources describe it as adding VecVoice speech and other changes while retaining the robot-maze foundation of the original game.
The release connects two eras of Vectrex development: Chris King’s 1982 console conversion and the early-2000s community hardware ecosystem. It shows how new peripherals inspired authors to revisit original cartridges.
This page uses one stable canonical URL for the title and loads its embedded ROM directly into the emulator after the Vectrex BIOS is ready.
Gameplay and background
Escape the mazes, shoot robots, avoid walls and Evil Otto-style pressure, and listen for added voice feedback when compatible speech hardware is available. Vectrexia runs the game code, but external VecVoice emulation support may differ.
How to play in Vectrexia
- Move with the Arrow keys or WASD. Compatible controllers can use the left analog stick or D-pad.
- Vectrex buttons 1–4 map to Z, X, C, and V, and to the standard face buttons on most gamepads.
- Press a controller button after connecting it so the browser can expose the gamepad to the page.
Audio may begin after the first click, key press, or controller input because browsers can restrict autoplay.
